Shame on Xacto September 6, 2010 SloHands2 (California) Cons: Lens fell out during shipping. No way to adjust the metal rim to tighten it to hold the lens more securely. Glue holding in the magnifying lens is very low strength and sparingly used. Glue that holds the thumb-screws and butterfly nuts together is very much stronger than that holding in the magnifying lens. Very small in size, I have seen larger more versatile units in local hobby and toys stores for ten dollars more. Thumb-screws and butterfly nuts used to adjust the positioning of the magnifying lens and holder arms are install so as to interfere with the adjust of the arms. Difficulty adjusting the arms. The base unit slides on most work surfaces.
Pros: Arrived on time. Base is heavy enough for it's size, and, if you attach a non-skid material to the bottom of the base, the base should work very well. I was able to re-install the magnifying lens. The glue I used when re-installing the magnifying lens is much stronger and dries clear, unlike what Xacto's Chinese manufacturer used. Clamps installed are of the cheap alligator type so there should be no problem replacing them when they break. Once it is repaired, you have a magnifying lens that's attached. My Munchkin loved it and for the price I was glad to gift it to him.
Overall, I am very surprised that Xacto allows it's brand name to be used with such a poorly made product.
Eh August 23, 2010 Steven H. Douglas (East Lansing, MI) This piece of equipment is helpful, but not the best.
The alligator clips don't hold tightly, the magnifying glass isn't very strong or wide in diameter, and it's not easy to adjust.
But it is somewhat helpful since I only have two hands, and one must hold the soldering iron and the other must hold one component and the clasp can hold another.
knife August 7, 2010 Gary B. Jones the older you get, the more you will use this product--fantastic for old, tired eyes
Great for the money! July 20, 2010 Skip Thomsen (Hilo, HI United States) This little tool is exactly what I expected. It's a nice, heavy-based stand, an adequate magnifying glass and it is reasonably flexible as to holding positions. The price dictated that the various adjustments would be less than precision, therefor somewhat difficult to lock into any particular position. Once locked in, however, they do the job. The clips are standard electronics alligator clips and the coarse-tooth configuration makes it difficult to grasp tiny items, but again, with some patience, it can be done.
So for a tool that I will use only occasionally, for the price it is a bargain. If I were to need it on a daily basis, I would have paid over $100 for the professional version.
awesome magnifier July 3, 2010 Kevin L. Riedl (Portland, OR USA) I highly recommend this to anybody who wants a magnifying stand at a small price. it is a lot smaller than I had expected, but it works great
the only bad thing I can say about it is that it has a small magnifying glass, so any big circuit boards you may be working on may be a pain to work on
