Product Description
To achieve a surgically sharp edge on your tools, nothing works faster or better than Japanese water stones. The abrasive slurry produced on top of the stone cuts aggressively and polishes the blade as it sharpens. If you've never tried sharpening with water stones before, you'll be astounded by the results. Combo Stone, 1000/6000 Grit.

1 out of 5 stars 36% less stone than you paid for   September 8, 2010
approach
The stone is significantly smaller than advertised. A smaller stone is harder to sharpen on, and because waterstones wear out, the volume of the stone determines how long it will last.

Amazon description claimed size: 2.5" x 8.4" x 1.2" = 25.2 cubic inches
Actual size: 2" x 8.125" x 1" = 16.25 cubic inches

So, you're getting screwed to the tune of ((25.2 - 16.25) / 25.2) * 100 = 35.51%

I'm not amused. It's going back to Amazon at their expense.

This whetstone is great for typical knife sharpening and polishing maintenance. It is especially good if you have a great set of knives that you want to maintain, like Henckels, Wusthof, Shun, etc.

It can be used in about 5 - 10 minutes after being soaked in water. However, it takes about a full day to dry completely.

For typical knife sharpening maintenance, you first sharpen on the 1000 grit side, followed by some honing & polishing on the 6000 grit side.

Alternatively, you can skip the 6000 grit side and hone the knife on your steel rod instead. However, the 6000 grit gives the knife blade a polish that cannot be matched by the rod.

Note that this stone will not fix damaged knife blades. This stone is also not good for dull knives; I recommend sharpening a dull knife on 240 grit first, followed by sharpening on 1000 grit, then a hone & polish on 6000 grit (or hone on your steel sharpening rod).

If you are not concerned with polishing your knife blade, then skip the 6000 grit and get a dual-sided whetstone with 240 & 1000 grits instead.

Cons: This is a water stone so it will wear faster than arkansas stones.
Also, you can't use oil it will ruin the stone.

Pros: Provides a deadly sharp edge, just perfect.
Also polishes using the slurry tht "forms" when using.

Versatility (1000 and 6000 grit i.e.medium and fine)

Now for those complain about the 1000 grit being too small compared to the 6000, I don't use the 1000 at all, I have a diamond sharpening system thatSmith's DFPK Diamond Precision Knife Sharpening Kit sets the bevel perfect and even makes it nearly razor sharp. The 6000 polishes it and makes it razor sharp (yes i've shaved the hair on my arm and leg numerous times to check the sharpness and also cuz its fun to shave with a tactical hunting knife!)

Every one needs the smith sharpening system, it's beautiful, perfect, inexpensive.

This stone gives u an extra kick from ur blade:) I recommend watching some knife sharpening videos for those of you who need to learn some technique, trust me you need to watch LOTS of different videos from different sources :) you will learn a lot as I have.

If you're looking for the ultimate sharpening system, this isn't it. If you're looking for an inexpensive but serviceable water stone set to learn hand sharpening, then it doesn't get much better. The bang for your buck is hard to beat.

1000/6000 is a good combination for knives that need a basic tune-up (I have used this to put a wicked edge on everything from a 2.5" Swiss army knife to my 8" Wusthof). The grit selection is a compromise when it comes to other tasks, though - 1000 is perhaps a little too fine (slow) for re-tipping or re-beveling, and 6000 is too rough to get a surgical sharp edge like you might need on a straight razor.

4 out of 5 stars Does the work   May 18, 2010

The product works great... with wet surface creates that nice "schmeer" as supposed to be. I have still to hone in my technique but gave a very fine sharpening. It does it up the stone, but that's ok for my home use and 12 or so knifes. I like the whole "ritual" anyway. Only con, it should come with a base for that price point.
